Our Story

Dr. Mark Witten is an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and retired Director of the Lung Injury Laboratory. This low-energy desalination technology came directly from his research in acute lung injury.

Phoenix Biometrics, a multidisciplinary team having expertise in physiology, microbiology, systems engineering, and commercial construction, is transforming desalination by mimicking the way lungs naturally transport and regulate salts, thereby demonstrating a nature-inspired approach to producing freshwater with minimal energy use and no brine waste in a transportable, scalable manner.

We aim at not only providing freshwater, but transforming waste into valuable resources. Our system is brineless, so instead of harmful brine disposal, our plan is to repurpose extracted salts for algae farms, which in turn absorb carbon dioxide, serve as a source of fertilizer, produce synthetic jet fuel, and generate nutrient-rich food pellets. We aim to maximize efficiency, minimize waste, and support a circular economy, ensuring long-term benefits for industries, ecosystems, and communities worldwide.
